Easy to keep on hand
I needed this for a science experiment for my son's fourth grade home school class. It worked very well. It's nice that it comes in a spool, as some wire I've ordered through other people has not always been on a spool. The only downside is that it has the insulation coating, which is the red you see on the outside of the wire. You have to scrape off that coating to make the wire show on the ends to be able to have conductivity. This is difficult to do efficiently on such thin wire, and often end up with little stripe at the tips that aren't fully scraped off and block the current from flowing through the wires. Also, it creates tiny metal shavings which you then have to ensure all end up in the trash so the cats don't lick them up or the children don't get them in their eyes. If none of these concerns pertain to you, then this is the perfect product for you. Me personally, I would prefer next time to purchase something with a wire coating instead.I would recommend this to others, I would just also make sure they know about the shavings because it's for each of us to decide if we're ok with it or not, or just to know to watch for it.

Thickness discrepancy
There is an apparent discrepancy between the 30 AWG specification and the outer diameter specified for this product. 30 AWG magnet wire has a nominal thickness of .0100" with a tolerance of +/-.0001". This does not include the enamel thickness. Depending on the insulation thickness, the diameter could range from .0106" to .0138". Is there any better info for this item than what is reported in the "About this item" section?

It's MAGNET WIRE. It's not supposed to be MAGNETIC!
Used to wind transformers for ham radio antennas. Several reviews of magnet wire have complained that it is not magnetic. That's OK; it;s copper and should not be magnetic. The reason it's called magnet wire is that one use is to make electromagnets and solenoids; a form of electromagnets. It's also used to make the windings in electric motors, alternators and generators. The coating is pretty tough, as it should be. It scrapes off easily with a sharp knife to prepare for soldering. I like the red coating because it's easier to tell when it's been scraped off. I also bought the copper colored product and it's harder tell when all of the clear coating has been scraped off.
