Cerrosafe Metal

A simple explanation of the melting and pouring procedure was provided in the instructions, which did not include an excessive amount of technical jargon. Despite the fact that this was my very first time utilizing Cerrosafe for anything other than a basic test pour, I thought it was fairly straightforward for me to follow up with the instructions. In addition, the instructions underlined the temperature range of 158–190 degrees Fahrenheit, which let me know exactly when I should anticipate it to be completely molten. This provided me with the assurance that I would not run the danger of overheating the alloy or accidentally harming it as I was going through the procedure. As soon as I began heating the product, I saw that it melted considerably more quickly than some of the other metals that I had previously used for tasks that were very comparable. Because of this, I was able to avoid having to often increase the temperature or wait for an extended period of time in order to get the desired consistency. I utilized this product in a rather simple setup, which consisted of a modest heat source and a pouring container. I was pleased to discover that the metal melted completely without leaving any gritty residue or contaminants behind. Due to the fact that it was a smooth melt, I was able to pour it into my chamber mold with pinpoint accuracy.

It is a low melting point alloy as described but it's not quite as easy to use as depicted

These types of low melting point alloys are useful for embedding objects that are oddly shaped and difficult to clamp in a vise for machining. If you make a mold box (silicone works well) that has straight and parallel walls you can support the object in the correct orientation and pour the metal around it so that any undercuts are trapped within the metal block. The block can be held in a vise and the object machined as long as enough material is embedded in metal to resist the cutter pressure. For this type of use defects or bubbles in the hardened metal are not usually a big problem. This material melts and behaves like a very low temp solder without flux and hardens like dirty solder, without any of the shine seen in the pictures. It has a very high surface tension, and consequently if you intend to attempt any casting you need to either pressure cast or have sufficient metal to allow for some sprue length and pour basin to give a little head pressure. Any attempt to cast the metal in an open face mold will most likely be unsatisfactory as the surface tension keeps the molten metal from going into any crevices. The 8oz quantity here is adequate for things like small jewelry pieces but anything larger starts to take quite a bit more material if you are intending to embed it in a cubic shape. This material is what the description says, and despite the "safe" in the name the lead and cadmium in the alloy need to be respected. To the seller's credit they do show the written warnings. Just don't expect to be able to cast the clock gears shown in one of the pictures without more metal and a large mold, or some pressure or centrifugal casting equipment.

This didn’t work for me

I bought this so called cerrosafe alloy as I had misplaced the Cerrosafe alloy I bought from Brownells. I tried three times to cast a rifle chamber with this product. All three times I had to melt it out of the chamber. Found the Cerrosafe I bought from Brownells and tried it. The Brownells Cerrosafe worked as it should.

It works

Good low melt solder, works for components removal.

Not Cerrosafe

Not marked in any way (like Cerrosafe is). Nor does does it look like the picture. No reason for me to trust it.

Works as advertised

I used a very small amount to extract a broken shell case from my 1873. Worked great!
