My niece's favorite book
I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan, but I had never read any of his children's books until I bought this one for my 19-month-old niece. It's very good writing (what else would you expect from Neil?) and the illustrations are unique and very striking. This is now my niece's favorite book, and she has a ton of them.

RETELLING OF OLD FOLK TALE
This is a retelling of a very ancient folktale from Africa, I believe. Retold very ably by Neil Gaiman. As the title says, a boy swaps his father for 2 goldfish. He has his reasons, but his mother is upset and insists he get his father back. But that is not so easy. A tale of a quest, and a struggle, growth and learning. Told with great humor and entertainment, and a few variations from the original. You will love this one.

Great book, not great idea
Guys... my husband is now in a plastic bag of water and my goldfish are in my bed. Don't give this to your kids if they don't know how to separate fact from fiction. My fish are flopping around and my husband's whining.Otherwise, loved it.

Fantastic Book
I bought this for my grandson and he totally loved it. In fact I gave all of my grandchildren Neil Gaiman story books and they were a true hit. The parents loved them as much as the kids, if not more.Fantastic

Neil’s second best picture book (but it hasn’t aged well…)
Amazing book, though now that we are a bit more aware of such things, when I’m reading it toMy students I change the fat phobic line to something else (my secret, but it works and isn’t offensive ). Not sure what to do with the part where the kid ties upAnd puts a gag in his littleSisters mouth. That’s definitely problematic.

Silliness and fun for the early grades.
The young ones should enjoy this silliness -- just hope they don't get any ideas about trading you for goldfish or a birdhouse or silly masks.Neil Gaiman always delivers and the art by Dave McKean is an amusing mixture, somewhat collage-like (sorry, I don't know much about art techniques, I just know when I really like art that also helps move the story along).

Such a fun read
My 8 year old has loved this book for a couple of years. I purchased the hard copy to ensure he can read it over & over on its own before he no longer enjoys doing so. This is definitely just a fun read as he reads at a 5th grade level, but nothing beats Neil Gaiman having a boy’s dad traded around town for fish & toys.

Dad was a little dull!
Dad just sat around reading the newspaper, so really, why not? Mom wasn't too pleased when she found out Dad had been traded off. The amusing part is that all the other neighborhood kids kept trading him around too, because he really wasn't all that interesting. I thought this would be a good book to read to my 5 year old grandson, but he didn't find it funny. He thought it was just mean to trade off Dad! The book was well written and I think many children would actually like the concept!

Perfect, Mr. Gaiman!
It's so simple and it's so good! I found it funny, this book took me back to my childhood, where I used to swap all of my stuff with my friends.

So much fun!
I LOVED this book. What a hoot! It was so amusing, so entertaining and so very clever! The premise was so simple, yet so unlike anything else I've read for children. Neil Gaiman has the uncanny gift of being able to delve into the brains of any age group and write for them. In this case, it was the brain of a child, who was sick of seeing his dad just sitting around reading the newspaper. A child who was jealous of his friend's goldfish and wanted them so badly, he was willing to trade for them. In steps the useless, newspaper-reading, dad. The friend asks for the dad, the boy agrees. So the dad goes, and the kid gets his goldfish. What he isn't aware of is that his dad was being traded around the entire neighborhood because he was so boring. So his friend traded his dad in the next door kid's guitar, and so on and so forth. When the mom finds out what's happened, she gets mad and asks him to get his dad back. So begins the boy's journey to get everyone's things back to their original owner, in order to get his dad back.So much fun!
