In this case, brown sugar is added for bulk as much as for taste. Without the sugar, the tea, lemon, and other ingredients would be so light they would be like dust. Sugar gives it a more solid texture and helps it pour more easily. But it's still such a small amount that each packet only has 10 calories.

Q: Will this work in carbonated water -- without excessive fizzing?

I have no idea. I only use 16.9 oz bottles of regular water. It tastes so good if you take a gulp out before adding a packet. The taste is refreshing, just the right amount of lemon and tea. If you don't have a health issue, I'd use regular bottled water.
