Lovely pocket camera/monocular

I really don't know why people are so critical of this pocket zoom -ok the price is high but then any new idea is expensive when it first comes out -take a look at the photos and judge for yourself the three photos of the church show the zoom range optical 100-400-digital 800. Try carrying a load of camera equipment around with you to get 400-800mm as easily as this canon zoom. ok the quality wont match your big expensive DSLR but then you know that -that's not what its for -its for carrying in your pocket for those quick easy snaps -i've had plenty of cameras in my time ranging from medium format to APS sensor cameras but for me the fun factor of this canon and the fact I can grab a quick unobtrusive shot outweighs the disadvantages --good lighting is a must and as long as you bear that in mind this is a great pocket monocular/camera. Ok it doesn't come with a micro sd card that but wont break the bank will it? -Just get a Sandisk 32 class 10 and away you go -it doesn't also come with a mains charger which again is not a deal breaker considering your expensive iphone 12 doesn't come with one and many phones these days are not supplied with one --get the Anker Wall Charger USB C, 30W 2-Port Compact USB C Charger with 18W Power from amazon -job done -you don't need to buy the canon one. Ignore the negative reviews which complain about no memory card and no charger -the camera is what matters and for me it takes great snaps easily and fits in my pocket so its always with me.

I really wanted to love this as the concept is excellent, sad to return it.

The media could not be loaded. I will get the first gripe out of the way (which is not the products fault), but I did seem to receive a previously used device. Not a big deal I guess and there was no issue for me in the regard. The device is good quality, nice to hold in the hand and at 100mm and 400mm in good light it is a pretty good handheld spotting scope (about 7x equiv). But this is not rugged. Even after a day the rubber was starting to look like it could get dirty very quickly and I dread to think what would happen if you dropped it :-S Also, it is not weather sealed, although not a big issue if you are watching from a hide etc (which I do mostly).I am a birdwatcher who just wanted to stop carrying a big lens and camera as I only take photos for personal use, print them and put them on my album. I don't use them for social media or similar things. The device didn't really hit the quality I required for small prints, though I'm sure if you wanted to ID a bird when you get home it might be useful. With image quality not hitting what I wanted, I hoped the video would be better, but the image stabilisation is quite weird. I rested the camera on a ledge and filmed a swan and cygnets (should be perfect!). At 100mm then things were perfect, at 400mm a little off and then at 800mm the video was unusable for my purposes. Whether this will be fixed in the future I'm not sure. But it makes me believe that 800mm is just a cropped representation of what is being seen at 400mm and that is why the IS worse. Though why a stable camera/scope has stabilisation is kicking in is annoying. Unfortunately, you cannot switch IS off (or at least as far as I can see).In conclusion. This is not a camera replacement for those wanting stunning photos, and at the moment it is just good enough to use to identify birds you might not recognised immediately (as long as the light is good). And I do like this device, honestly, it is just not fit for my purpose. Maybe if it had been £100 I may have kept it for occasional use, but not when it's just shy of £300. So after one days results I decided to return it to Amazon, and when I get my refund I will get one of the Lumix bridge cameras from Amazon. Of course, if Canon can make improvements in the future, then I may consider it again, because the concept is really excellent, especially for nature lovers and birdwatchers (maybe other things). But it just isn't there yet IMO.I've included a couple of shots and videos (what I think are the best from today at Leighton Moss). The photographs reprint 100mm 400mm 800mm and the video was with the camera on a secure flat surface. The weather was bright from behind me, despite it looking cloudy in front. This was around 11:00am I guess.

Pocket size telephoto

Nice pocket size camera/videp recorder. It has 3 levels of zoom, 100mm and 400mm that are optical and 800mm digital. There is small level of customisation, but for most part of it work like point and shoot. So far I mainly use it for birds and wild animals (dears) photography, plus some garden video recording of territorial "fights" between neighbours cat and crows nesting in nearby tree.Quality of image is reasonable, but do not expect to be anything close to any telephoto lenses. Nevertheless good device if you go for walks. The only thing I did not really liked is that it comes with not the best wrist strap and it does not have any case to store it in as not to scratch front of the camera.

Its a lemon

I really wanted this to be OK. The concept was exactly what I wanted. Small, goes in your pocket, gets a snapshot, I was not expecting high quality pictures. But it's just poor. The good points, its size and weight are great, the zoom to 400mm is quick and good, but that's about it. You don't get a charger and it needs 9v on USBc I used my MacBook power supply but a phone charger wouldn't do it. The battery does not last long. The image stabilisation is poor (canon IS binos are good) the 100mm images are OK but you have your phone for that and the phone will be better. The 400mm images are soft (unedited pic shown) and the 800mm unusable. The autofocus is poor and may not focus on the subject, you can't override it. The burst mode 'torque steers' the camera. So its a lemon. Such a shame. If it was £100 OK but its £300 then you need a charger and a card.

Portability

I bought this for incidental birdwatching when out walking. Works very well as a monocular and camera for stills and videos. Very impressed with the zoom range. No good as a general camera as not at all wide angle. But you can use your phone for that. Friends were very impressed so it’s on a lot of Christmas lists for partners. Easy connectivity to your phone. You obviously have to accept that you can’t view your photos as you take them (as in a normal camera). Perfect for my intended use.
