6000 Btu unit vs the 5000 btu unit

Trying to review 6000 btu unit and Amazon keeps redirecting me to the older 5000BTU unit I bought previously to edit it. Why? they are not the same? I bought the "used/return" version of the 6000 btu electronic control unit for $70 off the new price. One star to Amazon for sending me an "acceptable" unit and it's not acceptable. Shipped it in a plain box with no packing so arrived with dents. Also came with no intallation kit, no remote or instructions. Not acceptable guys. Since I needed an air conditioner and since I didn't feel like hauling it back to UPS and since I don't like the fan fold side extensions, I kept it though I wish now I had sent it back and made them eat the freight both ways. As for the unit itself it"s pretty good. Keeps the bedroom at 68 degrees and the rest of the 1400sf house at 75 to 76 degrees. Runs at around 505 to 514 watts putting out 42 to 48 degree air. Dislikes: the ECO mode shuts off the unit when it reaches 68 degree set point and then doesn't restart even though the temp gets above 73 or higher. Starts immediately when switched to Cool mode. On low speed the fan is sort of loud and high pitched like its running on high when it's not. I would probably buy it again at the discounted price. As for the 5100 btu model-- I bought it to put in our bedroom as my girlfriend likes it 70 degrees while I am comfortable in 78 degrees. It's too small for the job. I have to shut the bedroom door to keep it at 70 degrees which means the central unit still comes on to keep the rest of the house at 76. I bought a "used" unit for $117. It appears to have come in original box unopened, but there was a hole punched in one side of the box and the rear coil had a flattened area on the fins about 1" x 4". I straighted the fins with a pocket knife (never had much luck with fin combs) and installed the unit with no problems. The unit runs at 390 to 460 watts which is less than previous similar units which usually run at 460 and up. It runs very quietly on low. The main beef with this one is the outlet vent doesn't have up and down vane adjustment--just side to side. Also, the new 6000 btu unit seems to put out a lot more cold air for another 60 watts or so I would probable go the the 6000btu minimum in the future. I may swap the units out to see if the smaller unit will do better in the smaller bedroom/house.

POWERFUL LITTLE UNIT!

My son's upstairs bedroom stays stuffy and hot all year round. I bristled at the thought of having a tacky looking AC unit hanging out of the upstairs window of my home, but reluctantly gave in and allowed him to purchase this AC unit for his room. Pleasantly surprised when he finally installed it and asked me to come take a look, it's small and POWERFUL! His room has high ceilings and even on the low cool setting, his room gets COLD! The low fan and high fan options are very useful too. The best thing? It's so small that it is barely noticeable in his window, and it just sort of blends in. Definitely not like those old school HUGE clunky AC units that weighed 50 pounds from back in the day. We also have barely noticed a difference in our electric bill, and he has this little unit running pretty much 24/7. Now that it's getting cold out, he's mainly using the Low fan/High fan options to pull cold air from outside. So, you could definitely use this up through Fall, but we will most likely take it out of the window once it starts to frost in the coming weeks. All in all, this was an EXCELLENT purchase.

Watch out if buying other than new ....

I have bought a couple of these little 5K btu A/C 's GE manual control . The new one was fine , no problems . This past winter I bought another listed as "like new" . The "like new" unit came in a box that was battered and more repair tape than cardboard . This "like New" unit looked like it had been dropped from a 3rd story window , most of metal parts were bent and much of the rear coil fins bent flat . Front plastic panel cracked, on and on . It did however have all the parts . Didn't look at it much until warm weather came , ( by then of course the return window was expired ) . Got the toolbox out and began straightening metal , gluing plastic , putting fins back in place etc . HEY ! it works ! Have been running the unit for several days now and it works just fine on low cool or high cool . One of the selector knobs on front panel is a little off alignment , just marked it with a sharpie . Bottom line , Would think twice about ordering a "like new" unit , who even knows what a lesser rated unit would look like . I give GE 5+ stars for making a "tuff" little A/C but must subtract a star for the condition of the "like new" unit I received .This Is ; InMyOpinion .

Good buy. Works great...

The ONLY issue I have is that I can't adjust the direction of the air up or down. I can left to right, but not up or down. I have a tall bedroom window ((5 ft tall), and the sill is barely 2 ft off the ground) so I would have liked to tilt the air flow up a little bit, but I can't.Other than that? It's doing an amazing job.Because it was shipped I let it sit for a few hours with just the fan on before I turned on the AC unit, (let the refrigerant settle), and just the fan was cooling the room. Most AC units will pull air from outside, push it through a coil that's super cooled, and push it into the house. This one pulls air from inside the house through the front, cools it, and then pushes it out.Just the fan lowered the temperature a couple degrees, because it was pulling ou the hot air, and blowing it back out cooler than when it went in, and when I finally did turn on the AC unit, it REALLY cooled down quickly. In fact, I forgot to turn it turn the first night and woke up the next morning to a freezing cold room. It's a little beast.
