Taking the stress out of hiking

Growing up in Michigan I am not a stranger to deer and horse flies. The areas where I have been hiking lately (very wet and swampy) have been producing a ridiculous amount of deer flies that seem to really like something about me. I cannot tell what it is however I was tired of trying to figure it out. The bug spray worked well enough to keep me from getting bitten, but the annoyance factor of having them swarm around my eyes and ears was horrible.I finally stuck one of these on an old hat I had and went for a 7-mile hike yesterday in fairly dense Michigan woods after a 2-day rain. From the first 10 minutes, I could already tell this product was working. While I could not keep the flies from hitting my face, I noted instantly they did not make a second rotation. While I still used bug spray on my exposed skin, the deer flies were absolutely eliminated. They were no longer a nuisance flying around my face and head. I have included a photo with this review. This is the photo after the first 3.4 miles. I changed it out after and added a new strip however as I was mostly in meadows it was very effective but had significantly fewer flies due to the area. Anyway... I would highly recommend this product. One thing I thought would be an issue given the location of the strip was a buzzing sound from the strip itself on my head as the flies were stuck on it, but this was not an issue.

These are amazing if you're in the woods!

These seem pointless..but they WORK! I use these during deer fly season and it's like a competition to see how many are stuck to the back of my hat by the end of my hikes! Highly recommend.Only wish they made something similar for my dogs!

Does what it was intended to do!

Puzzling how this has received some poor reviews because it did not help with yellow flies. It is designed and marketed as being for the deer fly, and for that purpose I can attest to its effectiveness. I have been a runner for many years but until this year I have always taken the months of June and July off since the heat is not much fun for us members of the big-boned brotherhood. However, this summer I started training for an ultra marathon and have been getting a lot of quality time in the woods. About every 1 to 2 miles I would start being pestered by a deer fly. After getting bit a few times I tried wearing a hat and that helped a little but they still would get my neck.I read that deer flies like the highest point and were attracted to movement, so when a deer fly would start buzzing around my head I would stop and thrust my fist into the air and move it around in a manner that made it look like I was mad at the world. Shortly thereafter the deer fly would indeed land on my fist and I would attempt to smack it. This achieved marginal results but it really slowed me down and made me look like I was crazy. After seeing the videos on the Deerfly patch web site showing hundreds of deer flies swarming one person I realized how lucky I was to only be encountering 4 or 5 of these pests on my morning runs.I ordered the patches and obtained instant relief. I put my hat on backward hoping that the bill would further obstruct my neck and make the deer fly more likely to land on the patch and not my skin. The deer fly would buzz in front of me and then disappear, only to be discovered later stuck to the patch. I hate running with a hat on but I hate deer flies even more so these patches are a must for my summer workouts. After two weeks of slogging through 9 and 10 mile runs at near 100% humidity my hat was getting pretty funky and I guess the combination of all that heat and sweat made the deer fly patches leave a gunky duct-tape-like residue (it basically is duct tape covered in sticky stuff).I intend to continue ordering this product for years to come. It works for deer flies. If whatever is pestering you is not trying to land on the back of your head, then it likely may not be a deer fly.

Back to buy more this year

I live on a few acres and spend a lot of time outside maintaining/enjoying various orchards, ponds, gardens, etc. and deer-flies used to drive me crazy. I hated to use those repellent sprays, because I know that if I get just a touch of that stuff in one of my ornamental ponds, it could kill some of my fish. (Besides, that stuff doesn't seem to repel deer-flies, anyway!) These patches have made all the difference - I think that, over time, they're actually helping me to reduce the deer-fly population in my area. In any case, I haven't been bitten once since I started using them, and it's so nice to be able to walk around outdoors without having to spend the whole time waving my arms over my head.I don't know where the other reviewers got the instructions to stick these patches onto a blue hat - I stick mine on my pink canvas floppy hat, and they work just fine (it's kind of like a fishing hat, I guess. You really shouldn't wear baseball caps in hot weather - they hold heat against your head and increase the risk of sun-stroke. A hat that leaves a bit of air-space above your skull is best for hot sun.)I change the patches out every three, four days or so; they're still pretty sticky when I do, but they're so full of deer flies (and the occasional housefly) that there isn't much space for new flies to land and go to their doom.Even though I hate how they pester me, I still feel bad for the little creeps. It must be a horrible way to die. They land on their feet and get stuck standing there - then as they struggle to get free, they only get stuck in deeper, until their heads get stuck and they expire. I tried crushing a few of them to put them out of their misery, but my finger got stuck, so I gave that up. The creepiest part is when you see six little legs standing upright on the glue... but no fly! Somewhere out there, legless deer flies are trying in vain to bite me - I'm not sure whether I feel sorry for them or not... o_0I was concerned that the adhesive on the side you stick to the hat would be as sticky and permanent as the side that traps flies, but it isn't - it's a completely different kind of adhesive and peels right off without leaving any residue. So I can still wear my cool floppy pink canvas hat out in public, too!
