Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers

Great explanations of assessment techniques, needs more "business" examples
I teach in a business college in a public university and this book collected all it's data from private colleges and mostly liberal arts classes (with some statistics and science examples). Would love to see an updated version that replaces references to chalkboard and mimeographed papers with the currently available edtech tools and options for assessments in most LMS and more inclusive examples. The true gem here, and why it definitely gets 5 stars, is showing how each technique maps to goals for what you want to assess; seeing examples of how other faculty have used it; and lots of ideas for how to adapt or extend the technique. Each of the 50 techniques includes an estimate (low, medium, high) of the time it will take the teacher to prep, for students to complete, and for the teacher to analyze the results. I think with edtech tools and so many options built into our LMSs, those estimates also need revising. Again, we can figure those out on our own through trial and error.Highly recommended, despite the dated nature of the instructions. I'm fascinated reading through each one and thinking about how I can adapt it for my undergrad and MBA students in supply chain and statistics. I think any teacher at any grade level can find techniques to use in any subject.

A valuable guide for teachers
Classroom Assessment Techniques by Thomas Angelo and K. Patricia Cross is designed for college teachers but can also be of use for educators at any level. The book is divided into three parts. The first section deals with basic matters, in particular a description of the Teaching Goals Inventory, which is the basis for their approach to assessment. It also gives a number of examples of successful projects. The second part is the main section of the book and provides 50 specific classroom assessment techniques in areas such as course related knowledge, analysis and critical thinking, problem solving and several others. Each assessment follows a format that includes 14 points including a description of the technique, its purpose, the exact steps to follow to implement it and the pros and cons of using it. The final section covers what the authors have learned from this work and what the next steps will be in this area of education. There is also an extensive list of resources at the end of the book. This book is an excellent guide for teachers in making assessments of their students. While designed for use at the tertiary level, secondary school teachers and even those teaching in primary schools can benefit from reading it as well. Teacher-trainers will also find it to be valuable.

A must-have for any college teacher
I was introduced to this book as a teaching assistant during graduate school. It is a priceless, and extremely useful addition to any teacher's repertoire. If you are looking for a variety of techniques to gauge student interest, prior knowledge, attitudes towards specific activities or projects, or to test basic knowledge after introducing a concept, this is the book to get. Each of the 50 different classroom assessment techniques (CATs) are discussed in terms of applicability, step-by-step instructions, level of difficulty, and field in which the CAT may be used. The very commonly used "muddiest point" or "one-sentence summary" are classics that I use over and over the in classroom. My students have responded positively to these, and my teaching has improved remarkably since my first years as a teacher.I highly recommend this book as a go-to for any college teacher, teaching assistant, and both lecture/recitation and lab instructors. Many of the activities provide quick and easy ways to identify your students' misconceptions, and to make sure everyone is on the same page. Why not maximize your teaching (and students' learning) that doesn't require hours of preparation? Get this book. It will change your classroom in small, but significant ways.

50 CATs-- one WILL work for you
This book is a handbook-style text that elaborates on the concept of "Classroom Assessment Techniques," a term used by the authors to refer to alternative methods of evaluating or assessing student learning. The book is a handbook because each "CAT" is listed in terms of how to prepare, use, and evaluate results; the authors also present rather subjective indicants of the amount of time required for each technique. The techniques range from the laughably simple (such as "muddiest point") to the more involved (such as student learning portfolios); the handbook is arranged in terms of types of assessment that may be conducted with each group of techniques. The book provides a wide variety of techniques, and the user should be able to find several applicable techniques for a particular educational situation. However, I would strongly suggest that anyone using these techniques NOT rely on this text as the sole source of how and why to do educational assessment and evaluation -- the field is too complex and the implications are too important.

Useful for all college faculty!
The book is big and heavy, but it is a worthy addition to any college faculty professional bookshelf.

Great book for High School as well as College
I bought this book to replace one lost that had been first edition. It is one of the best books I have read on assessment. It allows a teacher to asses where the students are using multiple means that do not require a written test. This allows a teacher to check on themselves as a teacher and check for student understanding without sacrificing teaching time.

Oldie but goodie
This might be an old book of tricks for instructors but it's still got a lot of very useful information in it. Some of it is still being taught to instructors-in-training.

Some good ideas
Needed it for a class, some good techniques. However, the layout was a little hard to figure out...which is strange for an assessment technique book.
