Cat vs. Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat

Not Impressed
I've had 2 tribes of 7-8 cats over the last 35 years. I disagree with many of this authors "insights", beliefs, and advice. I was hoping to find some info on how to help my 2 boys (13 and 6-1/2) get along better. Nope. She doesn't really seem to understand many of the problems or issues that cats have. For example:* My 13 year old British Shorthair despises the younger male (who moved in with us 3+ years ago) because he is JEALOUS. That's IT! The 13 yo (who was a stray adopted 10 years ago along with his feral twin brother who lived out his life in our big shed), and who joined an established 6-cat tribe was told by my late husband that he would be his Mum's last "baby boy" and he loved that position. When the black cat left his former neglectful owners and moved in with us, my big boy constantly harassed and bullied him. Still does, but not as much. This has nothing to do with dominance - which has been established - and which the recent addition has accepted. It's just about my 13 yo not wanting ANYONE to take any attention or love away from him!*The author doesn't seem to realize that cats act much like human toddlers. Now does she appear to realize that they can be TRAINED!* She doesn't seem to realize that WE are the "dumb animals" here - expecting our cat companions to understand everything we say but REFUSING to LISTEN to them! No! They understand every. single. word.* The usual "don't let them out" BS. My cats have ALWAYS gone outside. But we have RULES! Never before 8am, and in by (depending on cat) dusk, or later depending on the time of year - varies from 6pm in winter to 10pm in summer -as long as they stay in the yard. Cats are territorial (she gets that right at least) and know their property. My cats are allowed ONE yard over and that's it. Don't listen or come when called? Grounded for part or all of the next day!Do they "get" it? Of course they do! I explain it to them. They understand EVERYTHING!* Effect on wildlife and birds? Any cat who wants to live here MUST accept that all the birds in our yard belong to their Mother - and they must NOT harm them. They learn this pretty quickly. I find that telling them how sad and disappointed I am with this killing behavior, and that they cannot continue to live here if they don't stop ALWAYS works and has for years with multiple cats.IF you really want to know how to have a good, respectful relationship with your animals please read Kinship With All Life by J. Allen Boone. That book will help you learn to communicate with your animals from a mutually respectful and appreciative position.I am returning this useless book.

Great book
A treasure trove of useful cat information. Understanding your cat can remedy many unfortunate situations. That's a win win for both cat and owner.

Keeping my cats peaceful
I need help with 2 of my boy cats, and checking the behaviorist suggestions. Aldo ordered one from the Cat Daddy, Jackson Galaxy. Wish I could speak to him, don't want to re-home any of my 3 "kids".

The Bottom Line, It Works!!!
Cats are magnificent animals and while many cat owners are perfectly content having only 1 cat, I firmly believe that cats are much happier in pairs. Of course if your planning on having more than 1 cat, its optimal to get them when they are kittens as they will grow up together and they will develop a bond that will last a lifetime. Its much more difficult to introduce another cat into a 1 cat household and that is where this book is a necessity.I always get kittens in pairs. Unfortunately one of my cats passed away very young and that of course left me with 1 cat. It was a heartbreaking experience and ultimately we decided to just stick with the one cat as he was an extremely timid cat and we didn't want to stress him out by introducing another cat. Well fast forward 5 years and we changed our minds and decided to give it a go. I quickly learned why its best to get kittens in pairs. Our cat just hissed and hissed every time the kitten got near him. It wasn't really a problem as he basically just stayed clear of the kitten. Once the new kitten reached 6 months, he started terrorizing our older cat. He would just follow him around and jump on him when he wasn't looking. It was pure chaos and we really didn't know what to do. That is when I found out about this book and I immediately ordered a copy.To make a long story short, this book and its techniques worked miracles. We still have incidents here and there but for the most part we now live in a very peaceful household. In fact we came home last week and found them cleaning each other on our couch. It was one of the best moments I have ever had as a cat owner as the main reason we got the new cat was so he could have a friend again. To now see that friendship forming, well its absolutely priceless and I owe it all to this book. In all honesty I would recommend this book to everyone that has more than one cat, even if they don't have any problems getting along. It teaches you to understand their moods and actions and just makes you a much more well informed cat owner. The bottom line - If your planning on introducing a 2nd cat into your household this book should be as mandatory as the litter and food you buy. Even if you don't have any problems, this book can still be extremely educational in regards to feline behavior. I honestly cant even begin to give this book enough praise. Its the one book all multiple cat households should have.

Gatos felizes

This is the read for people who want to deeply understand the cat behavior and build a heavenly multiple cat home. Easy to understand and with good tips, this is the way to get the feline mind! I'm on my way to buy others Pam Johnson-Bennett's books.
