Best solution for locating underground wires.
Worth every penny if you have to locate underground cable and want to minimize your digging. I have a couple yard lights in the front on my house that went dead after a recent storm flooded the yard with salt water. I first tried another wire locator that lost the signal immediately when the wire went underground. My electrician when we built the house didn't really believe in plans so I started to dig (incidentally, several feet from where the cable actually was) when I remembered how much I hate digging through tree roots and so bought this device. I initially set it on the highest level and was getting a signal over nearly half of my front yard, that's how strong it was. I ended up tracing the wire initially using the lowest level on auto, and when I wanted to pinpoint the location, I lowered the sensitivity on the receiver. I was tracing 120 volt wires (power off, of course) in conduit about 2 feet underground; I have no doubt that this would easily locate wires buried 6 feet underground. I marked the wire path with spray paint and when I retraced the path, it was very consistent.Although the best wire locator I have ever owed, it does have a few faults ( because it worked so well in locating the wire, I'm not going to let these faults distract from my 5 star rating). The instruction manual is decent but could be a bit more useful and detailed. The receiver kept turning off automatically (although the transmitter fortunately stayed on). I wish there was an antenna extension so that I could hold the antenna closer to the ground without hunching over. I was hoping that there would be a significant drop in signal strength beyond the break, but because the fault was at a junction where the wires had been twisted together, it induced a signal in the wire beyond the fault. Lastly, my unit may have been a returned item as the transmitter already had a battery installed and there were no batteries for the receiver.Saved myself an electrician's visit and fixed the problem with minimal digging. All in all, a very cost effective solution for locating those otherwise impossible to find wires.

Helped me undo a rats nest of underground wires from the previous owner
So what happens when someone that should not even be allowed to plug in a lamp or change a light bulb that installs wiring? It is like you attached it to the tail of a spooked squirrel as it crosses the road--- no rhyme or reason to what goes where. That is my yard. A couple of light posts and an outlet that had issues since the house was purchased. Add in a bit of "what were they thinking...." and you know what I am looking at. After fixing the obvious above ground issues at each point, I then still had an issue when it rained--- ground fault trips. I bought this to trace out the lines. To my surprise some areas were buried 6" and others you could move a 1/2" of dirt and there it was. And nothing was straight lines as I tried to paint the picture above. Doesn't make sense and it really didn't surprise me as many other parts of the house was the same.As far as the tool is concerned, I did a little reading and went on my way. I was able to trace out 400' of lines in various locations with little effort. As far as accuracy, early on I for one point I checked--- marked it and dug down--- it was less than 6" down and my line I marked on the grass was off by about 3"--- so to me that is dead on. It also let me know where it was close to the surface as the signal would really get strong the closer it was. And yes, it was just under the surface. Traced out the rest and was all the same and easy to find.Overall, it worked great. I did have to supply 6 AAA batteries as it came with a 9V for the one unit and nothing for the other. Interesting, but not a big deal. I do wish there was a handle that was available so that I could sweep the ground without having to bend over. But since this is a once in a while deal for me--- also not a big deal but would be a nice option. I guess a furring strip or broom handle and a small bungee cord could be a makeshift pole/handle.Would I recommend it? Yes. I would say if you're even looking at this you have some semblance of knowing what your're doing or need to do. In my case, everything has been replaced and buried at the proper depth. Ever since...no issues with rain and ground faults. So definitely a good buy.

Unit does a great job of locating wires even if the manual is lacking.
This worked exactly as described, unfortunately yes the manual is not well written or descriptive, and the probes are NOT made for US plugs, when connected correctly, the unit worked perfectly. I was locating underground power lines from breaker to outlet. I turned off circuit, connected black to ground of outlet, connected red to hot (using short wire jumper), turned the transmitter to level 2, and was able to track the wire quite easily with receiver set to auto. Can also locate with transmitter at level 3, but level 2 allowed for pinpoint accuracy. I did notice the up and down locator tones had a bit of delay, so when sweeping back and forth for your wire, go slow. I was also able to locate the line to the sub-panel in the yard by turning off the circuit to the sub-panl, and turning on the circuit to the outlet. Signal was weaker, but was still able to track it. Would recommend highly.

Complete waste of money
I bought this to locate buried irrigation valves but tracing the signal proved impossible. I eventually found the valve boxes by probing around, and completed the job. Since then, I've kept the device in its carrying case, on a shelf in my office. Today, I took it out to give it another try, but the receiver won't even turn on. I tried new batteries. I even tried disconnecting the battery terminals altogether and clipping a power supply directly to the leads on the board. Nothing. All the electronics look perfect – nothing burnt or broken off. Unfortunately, I'm way outside the 6 month product support window. So this was a complete waste of money.

Apparecchio NON FUNZIONANTE, ASSISTENZA PESSIMA
